G’day folks, back again with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Service. First of all, I hope you are all keeping dry what with the currant wet weather and all. It’s been a rather busy April/May period for us with a bit of something for everyone really. Incidents ranging from oil spills, motor vehicle accidents, smoke sightings and a truck fire all kept us on our collective toes and totalling 33 calls during this period. The truck fire at MT White on the F3 was the highlight of the month requiring the resources of eight RFS tankers, a NSWFB appliance and NSWFB HAZMAT. The truck was well alight when crews arrived and breathing apparatus was required due to heavy smoke from burning plastics. A lot has been said regarding that job particularly from motorists trying to get to Sydney that morning and a few complained about being held up. All I can say is that the fire fighters safety and the safety of others is paramount, and if that requires closing-off a portion of the road, that’s the way it is. After all, wouldn’t you want to be protected from cars whizzing-by if you were doing a hazardous job? Things are already difficult enough without dodging vehicles and being the focus of someone’s frustrations in being late for work because if you travel the F3 daily, you have to expect these things.

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, Kariong RFS is on the look-out for interested locals keen to join the service. We’re in station Wednesday nights from 7pm and Saturday mornings from 8am for training. So if you feel the desire to learn how to put out fire, come up to the station and we’ll have a chat about you being a part in a worth while and valid community organisation helping to look after the community.

Our Fund Raising committee completed their Easter raffle at Clint's, Gosford last month with pleasing results. A total of $2900.00 was raised and three winners (names and addresses recorded)  walked away with some great goodies. The brigade has purchased a set of UHF hand-held radios which will be indispensable in operations where person to person communication is required. That brings us to the end of fund raising for this year and will resume after July and  hopefully some new and different projects will be hatched and I’ll keep you informed about them.

Finally, awards for this month. Standpipes’ “Did I Do That” award goes to the most photographed fire fighter since the RFS Commissioner. Our own Aaron “Tex/Pex” Medina has made it known that he is going to be a father which obviously means that this long suffering wife Leanne is going to be a mum. Congrats to both, although yours truly has a sneaky suspicion that after putting up with Tex, kids will be a snap for his good wife.

That’s it for now. Seeya next issue.
