G'day folks, back with a little more goss from Kariong Rural Fire
Brigade for this
month. Well first of all, talk about your changing weather lately. First
it's heat then
pelting rain then you get a mixture of both and it feels like we're in
the tropics. No
need to go on your island holiday, it's cheaper to stay at home and get
the same
feeling I think, sea, sun, humidity and sweat.
Anyway, to some fire related news and it seems that with a little
dampness a lot of the
sting has gone out of any potential fire situations, at least locally
for the time being
anyway. This also includes a lot of hazard reductions planned for this
time of year so
as you can see our plans have been a little disjointed.
Although, the weather didn't stop a fire starting at Mangrove Mountain
tip during mid
November. For two days, local RFS crews kept an eye on this fire from
spreading to
near-by bushland and at the time of typing this issue, were still
involved in keeping it
under control. Just goes to show folks, that it can start anywhere, any
time and any
place. Readers, do the fire services a great favour would you. If you
see smoke where
it shouldn't be i.e. not in a properly constructed BBQ or fire place or
persons
decamping from that smoke in a great hurry. Try firstly to get some
details such as
rego numbers or any type of identification details and its location.
Then call 000 and
report it ASAP. The quicker the fire services can get to a fire, the
quicker it can be
dealt with and everyone will be happy.
Kariongs' Christmas raffle is proceeding at a steady pace and hopefully
soon we'll
see the fruits of our labors. Plans are "in the pipes" to aquire a troop
carrier or
personnel carrying vehicle to assist us in moving fire fighters and
equipment around
which will be of benefit to the brigade in times of crisis. So every
time you buy a
ticket, you'll be assisting us in providing a better equipped service to
the local
community.
On the subject of raffle tickets, I'd like to share with you an
experience I had this
week. It has something to do with the family who lost all their
possessions in a house
fire in Wyoming during November. A lady came up to me in Mann Street one
day and
said that she'd like to buy a ticket. No drama I thought, so I asked the
usual questions.
You know; name, contact number, that sort of thing. Then she floored me.
She said
put it in the name of the family that experienced the tragedy care of
her and if she
wins anything she'll donate it to that family. Trust me when I tell you
this that two
grands worth of goodies or a telly or even an X Box after all that bad
luck would take
the edge off Christmas....don't you think? Even the thought of doing
something like
that makes you feel good and we all need to feel better about ourselves
and for our
mates particularly at this time of year. I don't want to put a too finer
point on the story
readers but it does show that the spirit of friendship and good will is
still out there.
On behalf of Kariong Rural Fire Service and indeed ALL fire services,
have a safe and
enjoyable Christmas and a great New Year. Seeya.
