G'day folks. I'm back with some more of the good oil from Kariong rural
Fire
brigade.
The weather is finally cooling down after a particularly torrid summer
which
is a welcome relief to some but to us it means hazard reduction time.
I've
mentioned in the last issue of the Connection, that the RFS will be
conducting hazard reduction burns around the district in an effort to
get
fuel loads down before next summer. Some areas treated so far are around
Kincumba Mountain, areas of Peats Ridge road, areas down around Lower
McDonald (out Spencer way) and the next area to be looked at locally
will be
around Calga. I would suggest that if you have any questions or
concerns,
give Gosford Fire Control Centre a call on 4340 2911 and they'll be more
than happy to help you out. Remember though, if reporting a fire, ring
000
for help.
Now that we're out of fire season and for those on properties, any
burning
off still needs be addressed through the local Fire Control Centre. As
mentioned, a simple phone call to the number above will save any hassles
or
embarrassment so do yourself a favour and have a chat with the guys at
Gosford Fire Control before you decide to light up.
Another item that is a "red hot" issue is that of smoke detectors. Just
about every firie has "banged on" some time or another about the
importance
of having at least one in the house and you've probably heard all the
cliché's as well, "not just noise makers or ceiling ornaments, friends
in
high places" and so on. Well, now it's law and quite frankly none to
soon
according to this writer. After May 1, every household in NSW will be
required to have at least one working smoke detector fitted and
operational.
So, if you haven't got one yet folks now is the time to get one and
they're
really not that expensive. For the price of a couple of cappuccinos you
can
get a base line model that will give you some peace of mind and whilst
I'm
on the subject, they don't work on fresh air either you know; they need
a
power source. If you've got one "hard wired" in, good onya but if you've
got
a battery operated one, check it weekly and if the battery is flat
change it
then and there because you'll never forgive yourself if something
happened
after you've said to yourself, "I'll get a new battery next shopping
day".
Ok folks, that's it for now. Stay safe and we'll catch up next issue.
