Hi all! I'm back with some more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade for
this month. Well, as I said to you in previous issues that the weather
will
start to cool-off very soon and as I sit and type, a gray fog envelopes
Kariong. The bushfire danger period might be over but that doesn't mean
that
being vigilant should be any less. As some of you my have read in local
papers, about house fires, the fire services are asking the public to be
aware of all their heating and cooking appliances in the home. Some of
you
old enough may remember the advertisement on telly about a mum cooking
the
chips in a pot of oil on the stove, then getting a phone call and
forgetting
about the chippies. The pot boils over, catches fire and then that
famous
line, "oh my God! The chips" I tell you folks, it happens and not just
with
mums but dads and kids too and the results can be horrendous.
I can tell you folks that when fire fighters see that sort of story in
the
papers and one of the results is a fatality; we hang our collective
heads in
sorrow and frustration and ask ourselves why. Is the public listening to
us?
Are they paying attention? The answer is; probably. The message is
simple
folks, be aware of what you do in and around the house. Check your
heating
appliances. Keep an eye on what you're cooking on the stove and
regularly
check your smoke detector. If you've got kids, keep an eye on them near
cooking utensils being used and so on. If you need answers to questions
that
you may have about safety around the home then do yourself a favour and
call
in to your nearest fire station and ask. The guys will put you in touch
with
all the latest info and give you pointers on how to best protect
yourself
and your family. Or, call Gosford Fire Control on 4340 2911.
Operationally speaking, Kariong has had an average month with 17 calls
comprising of: 3 motor vehicle accidents, 3 car fires, 1 structure fire,
1
truck fire, 2 calls to trees down, 2 bush alight and 1 "drum on freeway"
totaling 17 calls for the month.
Congratulations also go to several members attaining qualifications.
They
are Glyn Jones for First Aid. Zack Monti and Mat Foster for attaining
their
Basic Fire Fighter qualification. Well done lads!
As I have said in the past folks, the NSWRFS has training at all levels.
This brings me to another point. The RFS has started a recruiting
campaign
with info in the print media so if you've been thinking about joining
the
service, look out for that one. Remember, there's more to just fire
fighting
in the NSWRFS. There are other areas as well such as communications,
logistics, catering, air base operations, bulk water transport just to
name
a few. Have a think about it. It could be the sort of thing that you
might
like to do. For further details call Gosford Fire Control.
Lastly, we at Kariong would like to send best wishes to one of our new
members Jason Stack. The lad had a serious accident recently but
thankfully
is recovering in hospital. Get well soon mate and we hope to see you
around
the station some time in the future.
That's it for now folks. Remember, stay safe and be Firewise.
