Hi all. I'm back with some more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade.
Well,
I don't know about 'ol Mother Nature but I'm sure that she's flipping a
coin
to see what kind of weather we'll be having. The start of August saw us
all
freezing. The middle of August saw us in shorts and T shirt during the
day.
Now, whilst I sit and type, it's raining again. Talk about your
indecision!
Anyway, one thing for sure is that it will soon be summer so before we
get
there get some yard work done! You know what I mean. I've said it before
and
that is prepare yourself for the fire season with all the usual checks
such
as the house guttering. Make sure they're clean and clear. No dead trees
or
bushes close to the house. Get rid of any combustible items such as wood
stacks, rubbish and so on away from the house. Have an evacuation plan
in
place in case you need to move in a hurry. Write it all down and make
sure
everyone in the house-hold understands it and knows what to do if you
need
to use it in an emergency. If you have any questions about what you can
do
further to protect yourself, contact your nearest fire station or
Gosford
Fire Control on 4340 2911 and ask the guys there. They'll be more than
happy
to help you.
On the matter of bushfire may I speak to you on one of my favorite pet
hates
and that is that seasonal pest, "the fire bug" As you would imagine,
fire
can start any number of ways. In nature it can start by lightning
strikes,
sunlight magnified through broken glass and spontaneous combustion just
to
name a few. Talk to a fire fighter and they'll add three more variables:
men, women and children. I'm not kidding around with this one folks. If
you
detect, or see some person actually doing this or someone acting
suspiciously around or near the bush contact the police and pass on your
information. What this effectively does besides nabbing the miscreant is
it
builds up a profile of facts that can be used at a later date to put
these
individuals away. So keep an eye out as we move into the warmer months.
Now, mark the 16th of September down on your calendar as RFS Open Day.
In my
last issue, I mentioned that all or most RFS fire stations will be open
to
the public to give Mr. & Mrs. Citizen a chance to have a bit of a
"sticky
beak" around our stations. See how we do things. Look at the trucks and
equipment. Get some important info on bushfire safety and joining the
service. Have a cuppa and chat to the firies. Let the kids "go off" with
some fun activities going on around the station. Your local RFS station
Kariong will be open from 9am to 3pm so make it a date to come and see
us.
We're on the corner of Woy Woy road and Dandaloo St next to the Progress
Hall and tennis courts.
You'll see the banners up on the day so look out for them.
OK. That's it for now. Remember stay safe and be Firewise. Seeya.
