G'Day all. I'm back with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade. As I
sit
at my desk typing, the weather outside is cool and overcast as winter
should
be. However, you would have been excused for thinking that we were
getting
an early spring with a sudden rush of warm weather only a few short
weeks
ago. So much so, that a small fire had broken out and spread, out
Somersby
way along Dog Trap road which required the attendance of four brigades
to
'round it up. After chasing that fire around the bush for four or five
hours
I was chatting with the boffins who live and breath all things weather
related and I found out that we had experienced the weather phenomena
called
"cross over". For those playing at home, that means the relative
humidity
had dropped below the ambient outside temperature. In bushfire fighting
terms, low humidity and warmer temperatures tends to aid fire ignition
and
spread and it also makes a lot of fire fighters a bit edgy.
This "cross-over" affect is uncommon during the cooler months and it
highlights the unpredictability of weather. It also indicates that right
about now is a good time to be thinking of your "bushfire action plan".
In
essence, the plan you come up with now will be the "game plan" you'll
use in
case you need to quickly move yourself, family and possessions, away
from an
advancing bushfire. Now, before you start throwing the photo albums,
potted
plants and paperwork into the boot of the car remember the words "in
case"
This plan is only a part of your usual pre-summer house-keeping routine
to
be prepared for the hot months ahead and we've been over that many times
in
the past. The drill is the same, tidy up around the house, get those
gutters
clear of leaves, and stack any timber away from the house and so on. If
you
want some good tips on preparing your plan, get yourself up to Gosford
Fire
Control on Woy Woy road pronto and get all the info you need to be
prepared.
Or give them a call on 43402911, it's that simple.
Whilst you're up at the Control Centre, get yourself some info on
recruiting. The NSW Rural Fire Service is recruiting for new members or
old
ones for that matter. Kariong like all other stations around the state
is on
the look out for community minded people who are interested in joining a
community based organisation. If "chewing some smoke" as a fire fighter
is
not your thing, then there are other areas which you could involve
yourself
in such as communications, catering, logistics, aviation support and
bulk
water haulage. You'll get all the training you need to start with
on-going
training programs for other areas of expertise, uniform and footwear.
You
also get the personal reward of self satisfaction that you are doing
your
part for the community because as the RFS logo states that it's "For the
Community"
Some dates to mark on you calendar. The annual Flora Festival at Mt
Penang
Parklands on September 6th to the 9th. Try and avoid Sydney if you can
as
this is also the time when the APEC summit is on. The RFS statewide Open
Day
Saturday 15th September. Kariong RFB 60th Birthday on Saturday, October
13th.
Finally, some ZEN for those stressed out; "I just got lost in thought.
It
wasn't familiar territory" or "If everything is going well then you've
probably overlooked something". I'll catch up with you next time.
Remember;
stay safe and be Firewise.
