Hi all. I'm back again with some more news from Kariong Rural Fire
Brigade.
Well, as you would have noticed, the weather is still very much on the
cold
side so I hope you are all practicing vigilance in your home electrical
appliances and not overloading power points. It's too easy to forget
about
these things particularly when it's cold and you want to run the heater,
TV
and computer game off the one outlet so keep that in mind and don't over
do
it.
Whilst we're on the subject of all things safe during this time of year,
I'd
like to share with you a little story about something that I saw happen
on
Woy Woy road one evening. I was traveling along minding my own business,
it
was just on dark and it had just begun to rain on a straight piece of
road
notorious for car accidents just past the scout camp road intersection.
With
me so far? Now a car, a white sedan as a matter of fact approaches from
behind, does a little tail-gating then over-takes me at speed at that
time
of night, in wet conditions against double centre lines. A recipe for
disaster I hear you say. You bet! You hear this story time and time
again.
That driver not only placed his or herself as well as me in a serious
situation in terms of either having a head-on collision or loosing
control
of the vehicle in the wet and crashing. I have seen it too many times
folks.
This person for all I know is a normal decent human being but in a
sudden
moment of "common-sense melt-down" all this was replaced with haste,
impatience and over-confidence which could have resulted in a serious
accident. Luckily for that driver there were no on coming cars and I
slowed
down a little to let them in safely and he or she I assume arrived
safely at
their destination. Folks I've said it over and over again but please do
yourself and your friendly emergency service personnel a favor and DRIVE
TO
THE CONDITIONS and DRIVE SAFELY because THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SAFE
SPEEDING.
OK, now that I've got that off my chest, onto something different. The
Rural
Fire Service will be having an "Open Day" statewide on Saturday
September
16th. This means that local RFS fire stations will be thrown open to the
public to come on in and have a peek at how we do things. Kariong
station
will be participating in the event and the invitation is there for all
local
"Kariongites" and others to come on up on the day and sample some old
fashion RFS hospitality. There will be lots of free info on all sorts of
Firewise and bushfire stuff, you can get info on how to join, displays
of
equipment and vehicles and fun stuff for the kids. We'll be open from
9am to
3pm so make it a date and come up and see us.
OK folks. That's it for now. Seeya next issue and remember: Stay safe
and be
Firewise.
