G’day all.
I’m back with some more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade for
this month.
Thankfully, things have settled down a bit since the big storms of June
which
has given a lot of people a chance to get some storm damage work done.
As
they say though, the road to recovery can be a long one and I’m sure
that
it won’t be too long before all of us are back to normal.
During July, several members from Kariong brigade along with a select
group
representing other emergency services, had the chance to meet the Prime
Minister,
John Howard at a special function held at the Mingara Club. The
function,
held on July 6th was partly a personal ‘thank-you’ from the PM and other
local MP’s including the likes of Jim Lloyd, Chris Hartcher and Ken
Ticehurst,
to those personnel who put themselves out there when it was needed.
Politics
aside the general feeling was that there was a great level of
appreciation
expressed on behalf of the general public and that the politicians
themselves
were grateful of the effort put in by the emergency services. As an
aside,
thanks to Jim Lloyd we even managed to get a quick ‘snap’ of the PM in
front
of the tanker with the rest of the Kariong crew who attended on the day.
Operationally speaking, it was a busy month for Kariong. A part from all
the storm and tempest work Kariong also attended 13 motor vehicle
accidents,
1 car fire, 1 search and rescue operation, 3 structure fires, 2 oil
spills,
1 tip fire, 2 automatic fire alarms and 1 smoke sighting. A job well
done
by a group of local volunteer community members working for the
community.
‘ONYA’ guys!
Onto some Community Education news, Kariong attended the Little Angels
Pre-school
on July 20th to have a chat with some of the ‘littlies’. The basics of
fire
protection were covered with an emphasis on what to do when fire is
experienced.
The highlight of course was the tour of the tanker which is an absolute
must
for any 4 or 5 year old and thoughts of being a fire fighter one day was
on everyone’s lips and in the ears of all the mums and dads. By the way,
any group who would like to have a Firewise talk, the brigade is more
than
happy to oblige. Just contact Gosford Fire Control Centre on 4340 2911
for
details.
Don’t forget to mark down September 15th on your calendar for the state
wide
RFS ‘Open Day’ this year. Kariong will again be participating and this
year
we plan something different so this writer has been told. The ‘brains
trust’
of the brigade isn’t saying too much right now so I’ll keep you informed
about that one as news comes to hand.
Also, the issue of burning off storm damage material has bobbed-up.
Folks,
the message is; that you can’t just burn the stuff. If you have any
vegetation
or building material to get rid of, it must be taken to the tip. If you
have
any questions contact the local council or Gosford Fire Control Centre
for
advice.
OK folks, that’s it for now. Remember stay safe and be Firewise.
