G'day folks, back again with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade.
Well,
another low-key month has passed us again with the brigade concerning itself
with training, recruiting and public education with the RFS's Firewise
program.
Let me get straight to the nitty-gritty. You would have had to have been
living on another planet lately not to have seen the tragedies unfold in
house fires recently as just about every news service carried them. Well
before the new laws about smoke detectors were even discussed, just about
every fire fighter was "banging on" about
getting one of these babies and installing it. I've mentioned it in article
after article and the message is, get a smoke detector. Install it. Check it
monthly for service. It is so simple yet so effective. Just think about it
for a second would you. These little life savers cost not much more than a
couple of cappuccinos and a round of doughnuts on your next shopping
expedition. Sure, you can get expensive ones if you want, it's up
to you but the bottom line is GET ONE, INSTALL IT, CHECK IT WEEKLY
especially during winter. I've mentioned many times before that winter in
Kariong can freeze the fleas on a penguins back so do yourself a favour,
check all your electricals particularly the heater, electric blankets and so
on. Generally, they only get a run a few months of the year before they're
back in the cupboard so a little inspection can go along way and if you're
suspicious about anything, get a licensed tradesman to do any repairs. If
you are not sure on anything to do with the issue of smoke detectors, fire
safety plans or what you can do to protect yourself, give ANY fire station a
call and talk to a fire fighter. Just walk in if you have to, and I can tell
you that these guys will be more than happy to help you.
OK, onto other news. Kariong had its AGM on June 8 with the following
results.
President: Kirri Vile. V.P: Darren Gauchi. Secretary: Amanda Sterling.
Treasurer: Chelsea Buckley. Captain: Barry Myers. Sen. Dep: Mal. Smit.

Gauchi. Equipment Officer: Graham Garray. Com Ed Officer: Mark Porter. Fire

Delegate: Mark Porter. Fund raising Coordinator: Rob. Sterling. Fund raising
Committee: Robyn Sterling, Amanda Sterling, Roanne Mossman. Publicity
Officer: Rob. Sterling. Executive Member: Rhonda Porter. So there you have
it, the team for 2005/2006.
Some late breaking news to hand is that Kariong is inline for a new category
one tanker. This is a new generation vehicle with an innovative design for
bushfire fighting. I'll give you some more details in the next issue. That's
it for now campers.
I'll catch up with you next issue.
