G’day all. I’m back with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade. Well,
what a start to winter! Only a few months ago we were all suffering the heat
and bushfires and now its torrential rain, floods and high winds. It’s been
a pretty torrid time for our guys as well with assisting the SES in storm
damage work both in Gosford and Wyong as well as being involved with the
search of Piles Creek when a family and car plunged into the swollen creek
when the road gave way during the height of the storms on Friday June 8.
I can tell you folks, it was one of the toughest days that I have had to
endure for a long while and I safely say that it probably would have been
the same for most other emergency service personnel. The combination of cold,
wet and uncertainty all made that day and subsequent days difficult in terms
of experiencing people’s heartbreak and grief whilst helping in a monumental
combined effort to restore normality.
There’s been a lot said about the events that transpired during June and
there’s not much more that this writer can add. What I would say though,
that no matter how tough it got, no matter how bitterly cold and wet it was
and no matter how heartbreaking it was, the true Aussie spirit shone through
the gloom. Police, Ambos, Firies, SES, the power authorities, the support
agencies and those that just felt the need to help all combined in a Herculean
effort under extraordinary circumstances to bring peoples lives back to normal
or as close to normal as one could. ‘Hats off’ I say, to these people who
put themselves out there in atrocious conditions to help the general public
in their time of need.
Operationally speaking, Kariong had a busy month with thirty five calls dominated
by motor vehicle accidents. 15 out of the 35 calls, just under 50%, were
to MVA’s which still highlights the need for road users to drive to the conditions.
The messages are still the same folks, there is no such thing as safe speeding
so slow down!
Kariong station has finally had its water tanks installed. This project has
been a long time in planning and thanks to members who have raised the money
in raffles and so on; the guys can fill the trucks with water as well as
wash them with no use of town water.
Finally, last month Kariong was involved with filming a ‘Winter Fire Safety’
advertisement. That is now being aired on Prime television during the day.
It’s got some pretty good info in it folks such as not overloading your power
points, taking care when cooking, not placing clothes too close to heaters
and not leaving burning candles unattended to name but a few subjects covered.
So when you see it folks, PAY ATTENTION! The information you see on the ad
could save your life.
OK that’s it for now. Remember stay safe and be Firewise and we’ll catch
up next month.
