G'day folks. I'm back with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade for
this month.
Well, not a lot to happening on fire related matters actually with
things
cooling down some what. However, the hazard reduction season is here
with
brigades getting out and about, putting in some valuable hazard reducing
burns in preparation for next fire season. And before anyone asks the
question whether it is worthwhile doing this, remember New Years Eve. It
was
a hazard reduction about twelve months prior that took the sting out of
the
fire that was racing toward Kariong that night. Yes it was close and
worrying to many locals but that HR was worth its weight in gold. So
over
the next coming months look out for info regarding any of this activity
or
simply contact Gosford Fire Control on 4340 2911 for any details on
hazard
reductions in your area.
Gosford District RFS has received a new public education appliance in
the
form of a trailer equipped with electronic gear and models that will
start
making its appearance around schools and public gatherings. It will
promote
the RFS program of FIREWISE which is a community education program where
the
general public have the opportunity to learn about bushfire safety,
personally and around the home. A part from all the electronic gadgetry
and
models, there is heaps of really important information leaflets,
applications and flyers that would come in handy for those around the
bushland fringe, on rural properties or for those just wanting to know
the
"ins and outs" of the FIREWISE" program. So, next time you're at the
local
fete, market or carnival look out for the red trailer and, "Get yourself
Firewise".
Lastly, Kariong attended the Peats Ridge School fire on the evening of
Tuesday March 14th. Along with other local RFS and NSWFB units,
firefighters
battled the flames to keep them from spreading to an adjoining
structure.
The fire destroyed the building along with valuable school resources.
The
heat was so intense that a new play centre about eight to ten meters
away
not yet available to the kids was partially melted giving an indication
on
the ferocity of the fire.
Kariong was required to be on the property the next morning for some
follow-up work and speaking to the school bus driver, he said that a few
of
his little passengers were extremely upset to the point of tears about
the
whole episode which is an example of the high regard the kids place
their
school. By looking at the staff, parents and kids who were there that
morning though, you could see that they were ready to tough it out and
get
on with business and from me, a big ONYA for that.
OK troops, that's it for now. Remember, stay safe and I'll catch up with
you
next issue.
Seeya.
