G'Day all. I'm back again with some more news from Kariong Rural Fire
Brigade. Well folks you all are well aware of the current drought that
is
biting into our every day lives and some sacrifices we all have to make
so
we can stretch our water supply as far as it will go. Kariong will be
doing
its bit toward water conservation by having water tanks installed
hopefully
at the end of March, early April.
The business of fire fighting as you would gather requires water as one
of
its fundamental tools in combating a fire as well as keeping the trucks
operationally ready in terms of clean hoses, moving parts on vehicles
and
pumps and so on. To help this cycle of maintenance to continue, tank
water
will be used to do the job taking the burden off the town supply.
On another subject, remember the station doors are always open for
members
of the public to come up and have a look around. We're open Wednesday
nights
from 7:30pm and Saturday mornings from 8:00am. So if you've ever
wondered
what goes on in a rural fire brigade or you have thought about joining
the
service, come on up and have a chat with us. We're always on the look
out
for locals who are interested in being a part of a community
organisation
dedicated to serving the community.
Just as a reminder too folks, the bushfire danger period and its
regulations
are still in force till the end of March. All burning off is governed by
these regulations and yes, this also includes back-yard bon-fires. So
before
you light anything even after this period is over, it would pay you to
contact your local fire station or Gosford Fire Control on 4340 2911 and
get
all the facts.
As we are starting to get into the cooler months it would be appropriate
to
have a look-see at your heating appliances as well. I'm sure the trusty
'ol
heater or fire place will be making a grand entrance sooner or later and
as
you know it can get pretty chilly around here so a little bit of an
inspection on their serviceability would pay dividends. If you are
unsure
about anything gas or electrical, get a qualified tradesman to have a
"squiz" at it to be sure.
Lastly, check your "best mate" up on the ceiling. That's right; the
smoke
detector. Treat it to a new battery then TEST IT! It could save your
life
one day.
OK folks that's it for now. Remember stay safe and be Firewise.
