G'day folks! I'm back with some more news for this month from Kariong
Rural
Fire Brigade. Well firstly, not much in the way of fire activity
thankfully
however it has been a bit dry as you would have noticed and although it
is
cooler some fires have been attended to that have started either by
accident, bad management or otherwise. It would be a timely reminder
about
this time to those who live or own acreage to heed the advice from fire
authorities on weather conditions, when and where to burn off, whether
you
require a hazard reduction certificate and the type of material to be
burnt
off.
The point is that you can't just simply torch your "heap" that you have
been
so meticulously building over the last six months. The heaps I'm talking
about are the ones stacked with all the unwanted building material,
household rubbish, the odd car tyre or three and a bit of the neighbor's
junk that he's too slack to take to the tip. These are a very big NO NO!
Here's the rub folks. If you are found to have lit one of these types of
"heap" on your property you can expect a sack full of drama in terms of
"on
the spot" infringements from council officers or in worst case
scenarios, a
visit from the Environment Protection Agency or EPA. And folks, these
guys
take this stuff very seriously. The best advice is contact your local
Fire
Control Centre on 4340 2911 and they can give all the "good oil" you
need on
the matter of burning off.
Kariong was also involved in the "Grand Opening" of Gosford Town Centre
on
Saturday May 13. Apart from a static display, we handed out Fire Wise
info
as well as a heap of sausage sandwiches. Yes, the 'ol sausage sizzle was
on
for all who attended the day and I can tell you it was mayhem. Sausage
chefs
extraordinaire Mal Smit and Don Simpson battled the snags from 10am to
about
2:30pm that day flipping, turning, cutting and serving. At the end of
the
day, both stated that it will be a long time before either of them will
be
able to stare down a humble snag again in other words, they were all
sausaged out. Don't think they were on their own folks; there was crew
of
dedicated butter spreaders, napkin folders, raffle ticket sellers and
"go-fors" who ran about getting more stuff as we desperately tried to
keep
up with demand. In true RFS tradition though we were equal to the task
and
we managed to keep the hungry crowd satisfied. The bottom line is
though,
that it was a very successful day for both the Centre and Kariong. Our
raffle which was a home entertainment system donated by The Warehouse,
was
won by Mrs. Pettitt (address and 'phone number supplied) of East
Gosford.
Well, that's it for now. I'll catch up with you all next issue.
Remember, be
Fire Wise and be safe.
