G’Day all. I’m back with some more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade. Well, I’m guessing that someone has found the “winter switch” and turned it on because it’s getting darn cold. As I’ve said in past issues, Kariong can get mighty cold in winter time and I’m also sure that just about every household has rushed its trusty heating appliance into service. You know the drill folks, make sure that all your heating appliances whether they be gas, electric and even wood heaters are up to the task of keeping you warm. If you haven’t already checked them then do it now and if you’re not completely satisfied that they’re in good running order, get a tradesman to look at it. I should also mention at this point folks, your stove and oven and any other cooking appliance that you may have. A part from keeping it serviceable, pay attention to your use of it as well and remember some simple rules. Keep an eye on what’s being cooked, keep the kids away from the stove, keep the pot handles turned in and away from inquisitive little hands, remember to turn the appliance off when finished and don’t leave appliances that are turned on un-attended. Do that and a lot of fire fighters will sleep a lot easier.

Operationally speaking, Kariong attended 21 calls for the month nine of which were motor vehicle accidents and mostly in wet weather. The message is still the same folks: drive carefully and drive to the conditions.

Congratulations go to Paul Barwick and Kerry Hatfield for completing their basic fire fighter course. Both have been working hard toward getting their accreditation and have shown great enthusiasm toward the service. Well done guys!

Kariong’s Annual General Meeting will be held on June 20th starting at 7:30pm at the fire station on Dandaloo St. Kariong. All members of Kariong Rural Fire Brigade and officials are invited to attend. Reports will be heard. Voting for field and all other positions will be conducted. General business will be discussed and dealt with. Any apologies from members should to be directed to the Secretary, Captain or Deputy before June 20, 2007. All proxy votes for any position, submissions or letters of intent should be directed similarly.

On a sad note, one of Kariong’s past members and local identity, Hilton Howe passed away just recently. Hilton was a “bushy” way back when Kariong was a little village and everyone got in and did their bit when things got really tough. Two of his sons, Glen and Paul followed in his footsteps into the service at a young age with Glen now being Group Captain 1. On behalf of Kariong RFB, our hats off to a fine gentleman and our thoughts go to the family.

That’s it for now folks. Remember, stay safe and be Firewise.
