G’day all. I’m back with more news going around the Kariong Rural Fire Brigade fire station for this month.

As you all can gather, summer is well and truly making its’ presence felt with plenty of hot dry weather about. Thankfully there hasn’t been a great deal of fire activity about in the local area but as I have said before, there is no room for complacency. And from what I’ve gathered, not knowing what’s going on or understanding what to do when the “wheels fall off the apple cart” has a definite unsettling effect on people.

As I mentioned to the group of locals who attended the Firewise talk morning held at the Neighborhood Centre on the 15th of November, there is no substitute for having a plan for your household if things go wrong. Amongst the topics covered, be ready around the house as I’ve said to you previously. Have a plan of relocation in case you need to move. Make sure everyone knows of and understands the plan. The last and most important point is to keep calm. As I sit here and write this column the air is filled with the smoke from fires in the Blue Mountains and other districts and this smoke tends to get people stirred-up. There is no need to start throwing the telly, microwave and suit cases into the boot of the trusty family car just yet. Your best bet is to stay informed of what’s going on either by TV, radio or internet and go about your business normally. To keep abreast of local and inter-district fire news, have a look at Kariong’s web site. That is: kariongrfs.netfirms.com and from there you can access all the info you need to keep on top of the situation. If you need further information contact your nearest fire station or call Gosford Fire Control Centre on 4340 2911 during office hours.

As an interesting aside from our talk at the Neighborhood Centre on the 15th, was just as we finished the discussion morning, Kariong was required to attend a bushfire at Somersby so it just shows that you never know when you will be called to act. Speaking of calls, Kariong had a mixed bag for the month. There were: 8 fires. 5 “good intent” calls. 1 “hazardous condition”. 6 motor vehicle accidents. 20 calls totaled for the period. This was another great effort by the members.

Another thing that happened during the last month was that one of our “Fire danger Indicator” signs on Woy Woy Rd. was tampered with and damaged. I don’t know who or what these persons were thinking about at the time or even IF they were thinking at all but they had the notion to smash the info panel at the bottom of the sign and remove the indicator needle. I just don’t understand it or why they would do such a thing but I am asking that if you see someone willfully damaging the sign, please report it to the police. Quite often members will go up and change the position of the needle but if you see any body trying to remove anything take the particulars and call the “boys in blue”. You will be doing your community a great favor.

Lastly, on behalf of Kariong Rural Fire Brigade, we would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. I’ll catch up with you all next issue. Remember, stay safe and be Firewise.
