G’Day all. I’m back with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade for this month. Well, it’s been a quieter month on the fire fighting front with rain and high humidity being the main contributing factor. As always though, when rain appears, so do traffic accidents so, as always, be extra careful when the roads are wet and drive to the conditions. Speaking of driving carefully, I heard an interesting story about driving on the F3 between Gosford and Sydney a little while ago. It was obviously said “tongue in cheek” but in some way after observing a lot of drivers on this stretch of highway I don’t think that it’s that far wrong. The story goes that the speed limit for all the “road warriors” heading down to the big smoke before 6:30am may be one that is at least 10 to 15 k’s over the designated speed limit. Unfortunately that or any other story doesn’t wash with the Highway Patrol cruising the freeway at that hour of the day and yes you will be fined. You see, the cops take a dim view of speedsters thinking that they are a cut above the rest of the sensible road users as speed is one of the biggest contributing factors to motor vehicle accidents on Australian roads. Folks, these may be old adages but they’re still good today and they are, “take it easy” when driving as, “it’s better to be a little late than dead on time”. Kariong’s Christmas Raffle project appears to be proceeding quite nicely with lots of tickets being sold so far. If you see us out there selling folks, try and support the cause by buying a ticket or three as there are some great prizes up for grabs. First prize is a BBQ and out door setting. Second is an out door setting and third prize is a 68 cm colour TV. All funds collected go directly to brigade operations. Just to give you an example of purchases made from money collected from our past raffles are new pagers, batteries for radios, equipment for station up-keep and maintenance, water tanks to take the burden of the town supply and audio-visual equipment for training to name a few. Ticket prices are $2 each or three for $5 and it will be drawn on the 15th of December at the Warehouse Gosford (in Market Place) at 12:00 noon. You’ll see us down at the Warehouse Thursdays and Saturdays and at Erina Fair so come up and support us by buying some tickets and you will be supporting a local community organisation manned and operated by locals. That’s about it for now folks. Remember we are in fire season so take all your necessary precautions around your house, be aware of your surroundings, stay safe and be Firewise.
