Hi all! I'm back with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade for this
month.
Well it looks like the topsy-turvy weather continues with hot dry days
moving onto cold damp days. I won't say "wet" just yet as everyone knows
we
need a good soak desperately out Mangrove Dam way and all that we've had
so
far is a little sprinkle to settle the dust.
Never the less, life goes on as we march into summer and with this
relentless march comes preparing ourselves for fire season or better
known
as "bushfire danger period"
Quite a few people have asked me on how Kariong is placed if in the
event
another bushfire makes a run on us as we all remember from New Years day
2006. Interestingly enough Kariong has virtually been surrounded by
fires in
the last couple of years both from hazard reductions to bushfire
outbreaks
so therefore there has been a significant buffer zone created around the
township. This buffer zone whether created by misfortune or good
management
has given us here in Kariong some protection from a rampaging fire but
it
doesn't take away the fact that the home owner still needs to be
prepared in
terms of property readiness as well as being ready personally with
escape
plans and so on. I've said it time and time again folks. If you're not
sure
as to what to do, give your local fire station a call or Gosford Fire
Control Centre on 4340 2911.
Another pet subject of mine is smoke alarms. You'll see in our monthly
stats
that we attended a structure fire which unfortunately was a house.
Reportedly there was no smoke alarm fitted and by sheer luck the
occupants
escaped as the interior was significantly damaged by fire and could have
been fatal. Guys if you are a: home owner, landlord or tenant your house
or
property has to have a smoke alarm; IT'S THE LAW! And besides being a
legal
requirement it can save your life in a fire so why wouldn't you have
one? As
I've said before, for the price of a couple of cappuccinos you could
have
some peace of mind so get onto it if you haven't already done so.
Operationally speaking, Kariong has had quite a busy month with 48 calls
comprising of: 16 motor vehicle accidents, 17 bushfires, 3 automatic
fire
alarms, 3 car fires, 1 structure fire, 2 pile burns, 4 smoke sightings,
1
burning log and 1 call to power lines down. Another great effort from
the
guys this month. Also look out for yours truly down at the Neighborhood
Centre on November 15th. I'll be talking about all things Firewise,
answering questions and giving away literature on bushfire preparedness
so I
hope to see you there.
That's it folks for this issue. Remember, stay safe and be Firewise.
