G'Day all; I'm back with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade for
this
month. There are a few very important things that I need to talk about
folks
in this issue.
The first thing is Total Fire Bans or Tobans for short. Folks, when the
hot
weather gets extreme the fire fighting authorities will more than likely
declare a Toban for a particular district. The total fire ban is there
for a
reason and that is NO FIRES AT ALL in the open and all fire permits are
revoked until the cessation of the ban. Folks, the rules are simple and
the
penalties are harsh and for good reason.
The second thing that I want to bring to your attention is the bushfire
danger period. It started on October 1st and will run through to the
30th of
March 2008. If you are a land owner and want to burn-off for
agricultural
purposes, YOU MUST OBTAIN A PERMIT TO BURN. These can be obtained from
the
Fire Brigade in your district or call Gosford Fire Control on 4340 2911
during office hours Monday to Friday. It pays to be informed so do
yourself
a favour and get informed by calling or, by simply dropping into a fire
station and get the low-down from the guys on your responsibilities
either
in a toban or obtaining a permit to burn.
Finally, folks it's only spring and there's been some pretty hot days
lately
and we've already had a couple of Tobans. You only need to have a look
on
the evening news and they're already talking bushfires. The Cowan fire
for
instance recently closed down the F3 and Pacific Highway. We've been
over
this subject before folks and I'm going to say it again; be bushfire
prepared for this summer. In your preparation have an action plan ready.
Look at your house; is it ready? It only takes a phone call to get all
the
info you need to be prepared for this years "fire season" so get onto it
guys and gals.
On to some lighter news, Kariong had its 60th birthday party on the 13th
of
October. About 60 guests attended the function at the progress hall in
Kariong. These included a few past members as well as many present ones.
By
all accounts, everyone had a great time and one of the highlights of the
night was the presentation of Captain Mal Smits' CD on Kariong Rural
Fire
Brigade from its inception to present day. It included buildings,
trucks,
events and featured some of the brigades "luminary members" over the
years.
A big thanks goes to Rob Berwick for providing the music. Nita Tierney
and
her mum for chasing everything up and for everyone else who pitched in
to
make it a great night to remember.
I must also mention to you all that it is Hazard Reduction time for a
lot of
areas on the Coast. Many brigades around the area are busy trying to get
this work done before the real heat hits. Kariong attended on out at
Mangrove Mountain recently with some great results. The crew was
"mentioned
in dispatches" for their outstanding efforts under trying conditions.
Brad
West, Rob Berwick, Josh Sterling, Mick Hughes and Zac Monti were the
guys
who did the job and well done to you all.
That's it for now folks. Remember, stay safe and be Firewise.
