G'day all. I'm back with some more of the "good oil" going around
Kariong
Station this month. Well it was a good down pour of rain last month
which
helped to settle the dust, fill some tanks and add a little more to our
precious water reserves. With fire season just around the corner though
there are plenty saying that it's going to be a long hot summer with the
first of the Total Fire Bans being declared in the Riverina district of
NSW
and there are those who may differ. Either way, be prepared by having
all
the prerequisites in place such as yard and home maintenance, escape and
evacuation plans, valuables and family keep-safe items sorted out and so
on.
Look, the facts are that we live in Kariong and surrounding district
which
has a lot of bushland butting up to it. It's a wonderful life-style but
it
has some stings attached and those strings include the understanding of
the
bush and its dangers. Do yourself a favour and at least have a think
about
what you can do to prepare yourself for the bushfire season and if you
have
already done so, have another look at your work to see where you can
improve
things a bit. If you need any help, contact your nearest fire station.
Operationally speaking, Kariong had a few calls for August totaling 26
which
included: 3 motor vehicle accidents, 7 bush alight, 2 Auto fire alarms,
6
motor vehicle fires, 2 structure fires, 4 smoke sightings, 1 tree down
and 1
call to power lines down. This was a great effort by the guys
highlighting
the fact that there are a group of volunteers prepared to go out at all
hours of the day and night for their community.
While we're on the community thing, our Open Day was a modest success
with a
bunch of locals coming up on Saturday 16th of September to check us out.
By
all accounts everyone came away better informed about either the RFS as
a
service or about how to be Firewise at home and in the bush. For those
who
still feel the desire to put out some fire, our membership books are
still
open and it's not too late to put your name down with the service. See
us
any Wednesday night from 8:00pm or Saturday mornings from 8:00am. Come
and
sit down, meet the guys, have a coffee and explore what the service can
do
for you and what you can expect to get out of a very worthwhile
community
based organisation.
Finally, I felt it was time to resurrect some of my monthly "awards" for
members who really excel themselves in the line of duty. There was one
last
month which I totally neglected to bring to your attention. That was the
"driving excellence" award which is a perpetual one, handed to drivers
within the brigade who really stand out. It has been given to our own
Don
Simpson. Why did he get it? You ask. "Don't ask" is the answer he'll
give
you if you mention the subject. Secondly the, "I know where I'm going"
award
for this month has been unanimously won hands down by our own Barry "Bazza"
Myers. It's a long story folks but just let's say Bazza's compass
battery
went flat on him.
OK. That's it for now folks. Remember stay safe and be Firewise.
