G'day all. I'm back with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade. Well
firstly our Open Day held on September 15 was a modest success with
about 40
to 45 members of the general public passing through the station to see
what
we're about. Either chatting to the members about the service or getting
some info was about the rule of the day. The kids of course, had to have
a
sit in the fire truck and fight the urge to press all the buttons and
dream
of being a fire fighter one day. Interestingly enough though, that when
it
was time to put the truck away, all the lights went on, the wipers
slapped
backward and forward full tilt and the radio was turned up full blare.
Some
kid went home a happy camper. There were lots of different questions
asked
ranging from what to do in an emergency, what are some things that could
be
done to protect one's self in case of bushfire and so on. Basically
folks,
if you're in that boat give Gosford Fire Control a ring on 4340 2911 or
just
pop up during business hours and pick up some info on your bushfire
action
plan and other stuff you can do in the event of a bushfire hitting
Kariong.
Remember, October 1st is the start of the "Bushfire Danger Period" which
runs to the 30th of March next year. Permits for burning off are
required if
you are a land owner so keep that one in mind. Another pest that comes
out
about this time of year is old mate fire bug. Remember folks, if you see
something suspicious happening near or in the bush or someone hurrying
away
from smoke in the bush be vigilant and get some particulars. Then pass
that
info onto the police ASAP! You'll be doing your community and your local
fire fighters a great big favour because there's nothing that fires-up a
fiery more than a fire bug.
Operationally speaking, Kariong attended 32 calls for August. Those
calls
comprised of: Motor Vehicle Accidents: 7, Bush Alight: 3, Car Fires: 7,
Smoke Sightings: 4, Automatic Fire Alarms: 1, Oil/ Fuel Spills:3,
Illegal
Burn: 1, Other Incidents: 6. Another great effort from the guys and
gals.
On a sad note, the mum of one our own members passed away just recently.
Jenny Vile mum of Kirrie Vile former Captain of the brigade passed away
and
will be sadly missed. The Vile family, are long time community members
of
Kariong with many remembering Kirries' dad Brian who was with National
Parks
and Wildlife for many years. On behalf of the brigade, our condolences
go to
Kirrie and the family.
Here's something to put a smile on your face. Over heard at a motor
mechanics workshop, "I couldn't fix yer breaks mate so I made yer horn
louder"
That's it for now folks. We'll catch-up next issue. Remember, stay safe
and
be Firewise.
