G'day folks, I'm back with some more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade.
Well after the hub-bub of the New Years fires, things seem to have settled
down around here; for now anyway. That doesn't mean you let your guard down
though. You know the drill. You need to keep up maintenance of the roof
gutters, general yard house-keeping, garden hoses and so on. We've had a few
spots of rain lately but that doesn't mean anything because just up the road
in lake Macquarie, where they've had a bushfire that took out a few
hectares. So that means we're not out of the woods yet.
Judging from newspaper reports, the fires we experienced appear to be a
mixture of an accidental or of a deliberate nature. As I have asked in the
past, if you have seen or know of any suspicious activity, please let the
police know about it. You have seen what a stupid act can do in our own back
yard so give your local firies and police a hand to nail these miscreants.
Kariong's ranks swelled a little last month with the induction of several
new members. Which reminds me; there are still positions available to those
that wish to join the ranks of the RFS. Just pop up on any Wednesday night
from 7.30pm onward or Saturday morning from 8.00am and have a yarn to the
guys. They'll answer any questions you have about this great community-based
organization.
Also, this year is Kariong's 60th birthday and we plan to put on a bash
around September so I'll keep you informed about that one as it gets closer.
Any past members are most welcome so spread the word around. For details,
give our Publicity Officer, Rob Sterling a call on 0414 22 1733.
Lastly, I must thank some people who helped us out during Christmas and New
Years. Firstly, to those who donated lollies to the Neighborhood Centre for
our Christmas Eve Santa run, a big ONYA and thankyou. As you remember, we
were called to Somersby for a bushfire about half way through the run so we
had to finish with Santa being carted around in our troopie which was
interesting.
Secondly, I'd like to thank Kariong Pizza and Pasta for donating pizzas to
crews coming off the line in that first horrendous day of the New Years
fire. Our own Catering unit was being stretched to its limits on the day and
when we came off the line we definitely were ready to "chew the posterior
off a low flying duck" as were others in our area. When those pizzas arrived
it resembled the "Relief of Mafeking" with no morsel left only gratitude. I
can tell you that some of those pizzas kept the choppers flying that day.
Well done and thankyou from those crews.
Ok, that's it for now. Seeya next issue.
