G' day all. I'm back with more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade. In
the
last issue of the "Connection" I was telling you about the Mangrove
Mountain
fire. Well, that one was resolved after a couple of days of back burning
with the added bonus of some rain which finally put the lid on the job.
All
in all, it was a good result as it had potential to be a lot worse had
the
winds kept up in their erratic behaviour.
The other major incident this month was the semi-trailer crashing
through
the guard rail just above the Mooney Bridge on Monday 12th February.
Kariong
was called to the job and assisted NSW Fire Brigades and NSW Ambulance
Rescue in getting the driver to the back up to the road and into an
awaiting
ambulance. The driver only suffered minor injuries however considering
the
extent of damage done to his vehicle all agreed at the scene that he had
to
have been the luckiest man alive. Oddly enough, it was the week for
truck
crashes with another down the Hawkesbury River Bridge the following day
and
a couple up north.
Operationally speaking, Kariong had an average month for fire calls and
these consisted of: 3 car fires. 6 Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA). 1
Smoke
sighting. 1 Automatic Fire Alarm (AFA). 4 Bush fires. 1 Grass fire. 1
False
Alarm. Totaling 17 calls.
We also have some new members who have qualified as "basic fire
fighters".
These young lads joined a little while ago amongst a group of "youngies"
and
have shown great interest and determination in getting their basic
training
done and will prove to be assets to the brigade in the future. Zac Monti
and
Mathew Foster are the two I'm talking about and it's great to see the
younger locals taking an interest in a very worthwhile community based
organisation. I hope that these guys along with the other new members
have a
long and productive association with the service.
Remember folks, our doors are always open for new members. We're in
Dandaloo
St Kariong off Woy Woy road near the Community Hall and tennis courts
and
we're open for training Wednesday nights from about 7:30 and Saturday
mornings from about 8:30. So if you have been thinking of joining or
just
curious to have a "look-see" don't be shy just come on up. Sit down with
a
coffee and have a chat with the guys in station and they will be more
than
happy to fill you in on being a member of the NSW Rural Fire Service. If
fire fighting isn't your "cup o' tea" that's OK too. Give Gosford Fire
Control a call on 4340 2911 and find out what the service can do for
you.
Right-o troops. That's it for this one. Seeya next issue and remember:
Stay
safe and be Firewise.
