G’Day Larrikin Locals of Kariong… I’m here with the news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade for this month. Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you all as being the new Mr Standpipe. My name is Russell Topp, I have lived on the Central Coast for a little over 20 years and roughly 6 months ago I joined the Kariong Brigade. For the regular readers of this column, you may notice slight changes from time to time, however for the most part things will stay relatively the same. Secondly, I would like to officially thank Bob Sterling (former Mr Standpipe) on behalf of Kariong Rural Fire Brigade for his outstanding dedication not only to the Brigade, but to the community in general. P.S. now I’m writing this column do I get to wear bright orange braces like you Bob? While compliments seem to be the order of the day, I would also like to give a big shout out and thanks to Belinda (coordinator of Kariong Neighbourhood Centre), for her amazingly tireless efforts when organising and publishing the Kariong Connection month in and month out. Thanks Belinda!

Congratulations go out to Zach Winslade who completed his basic fire fighter course this month. Zach is a dedicated and enthusiastic member who has worked hard to get his accreditation. Well done mate!  Congratulations are also extended to Don, Geoff, Mick, Rob, Paul and Zach Monti who completed their senior first aid accreditation last Saturday.

Well now the formalities are out of the way, let’s move onto some operational news. Kariong has had an average month this month…23 calls in total with once again Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA’s) topping the charts. Remember guy’s, they call them accidents for a reason…no one ever plans them. Let’s slow it down, take breaks regularly and arrive at our destinations safely. Bob quoted the saying last year, and how true it is… “It’s better to be a little late than dead on time”.

Moving onto general matters, Kariong Brigade is still seeking any support from the public whether it is financial or material in order to carry out “Operation Driveway Repair”. After all the heavy rain that we’ve experienced, a lot of it has washed away in parts leaving deep ruts. If you are in a position to assist please contact (02) 4340 1694 and pass on your details. All offers are welcomed and greatly appreciated.

To wrap up my first of hopefully many more editions, I thought I would pass on a joke told to me by one of lads. “A little boy and his father were walking along the street one day when the boy pipes up and asks… ‘Dad, if H2O is on the inside of the fire hydrant, then what’s on the outside?’ The boy’s father momentarily gives his son a puzzled look before replying…”K9P”.

That’s all from me folks, so until next time remember to Stay Safe and be Firewise.
