Hi all! Back again with some more news from Kariong Rural Fire Brigade.
Well, now that it's getting a bit warmer, it's time to do your checks
around
the house to be ready for the summer months. The start of October is the
start of bushfire danger period or more commonly known as bushfire
season
and this runs from the first of October to the thirtieth of March next
year.
As I've mentioned, you need to start your housekeeping routines around
the
house now. That means getting those over grown trees and shrubs around
the
house pruned back, checking the trusty old garden hose for
serviceability
and length (so it can go more than half way around the house) and
cleaning
out the guttering of leaves and twigs. Other things to do could be
removing
stacked timber away from under the house, installing gutter shields and
making sure that all windows can be closed and secured easily. Check
areas
on the roof for build up of leaf litter and make sure the number
identifying
your house is clearly visible. For more tips and suggestions, make a
trip to
your local fire station or RFS offices on Woy Woy road and they'll be
more
than pleased to put you on the right track to best protect yourself this
summer.
My pet irrit for this month is that pest that just doesn't learn; it's
the
"lit ciggy-butt flicker". They're a real "fave" with firies during the
summer months especially when its that hot you could do a round of bacon
and
eggs with toast and grilled tomato on the bonnet of your car. You can
tell
them a mile away. Ashtray spotlessly clean totally oblivious to all the
info
pumped out in the media about how not to be a "tosser". I see them all
the
time, just driving along and bingo out she goes, a lit ciggy-butt like a
misguided missile carelessly flicked out the window just waiting for a
little puff of wind to blow them into the grass and kick-off a fire.
Remember that if you're caught it'll cost you so if you smoke, do your
friendly firies a big favour, stash the butts in the ashtray!
You need to pencil in October 8 on your calendar as RFS stations around
the
Coast will be having an Open Day. Kariong will be participating, not
only
having exhibits, equipment on show, bushfire information packs but also
info
for joining the service as we are now actively recruiting for new
members to
join our ranks. You don't need any special skills; just be a local with
a
desire to help your local community. We'll train you and provide you
with
all you need to be a valuable participant in a very worthwhile community
based organisation. Its a great opportunity for all to come up and talk
to
the members, have a look around and get a feel of what it's all about.
Any
phone enquiries please call 4340 2911 during office hours Monday to
Friday.
A part from all that, there will also be a sausage sizzle, jumping
castle
and face painting for the kids and the kid at heart so remember, come on
up
and check it all out. We'll be open from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm Saturday
October
8th. We're in Dandaloo St. opposite Langford Drive off Woy Woy road
(where
the tennis courts are) Hope to see you there!
